Amate (amatl) paper cutout of a humanoid figure, with various shaped projections at either side of the upraised arms, body, legs and between the wide-spread legs. Cut from beige paper.
History Of Use
These paper figures represent nzahki, which in the Otomi language means the living force of all beings in this and other worlds. They are traditionally used in healing and agricultural rituals.

Purchased at Victor's, an established dealer in Mexico City who specialized in indigenous crafts. Object was probably intended solely for sale.
Iconographic Meaning
Figures represent vital life force of beings both human, animal, plant and supernatural. This particular figure is identical with one said to represent Mu Huei, symbolizing the lord of lightning.
