Trousers, knee-length, made of hand-woven off-white cotton with bands of multicoloured geometric forms and figures brocaded figures.

History Of Use

The trousers are used for everyday wear. The wide top is rolled into a twist above the belt so that the trouser legs reach only to the knee. Woven by a woman.

Narrative

Trousers said to be more than 50 years old in 1978.
Although purchased in Chajul, Quiche, they are typical of Santa Catarina Polopo.

Iconographic Meaning

Designs include Mayan fertility symbols, human (chacs) figures, crested birds, and the tree of life. Also included is an abstract form of the double-headed bird symbolic of good/evil.
