Closing fan (c) in wooden box (a) with lid (b). Box has nine (? ) Chinese characters in black ink; lid has sixteen characters; one character at each end of box and lid. Box made of unfinished light brown wood. Fan has eight split bamboo inner ribs and two carved bamboo parent ribs. Fan face of paper has gold background with tree scene of brown, blue and green with two white birds.
Summer fan, round or folding, can be carried throughout the summer by both men and women. The folding fan is seen more often at the theatre or on the street as it can easily be tucked into the kimono or obi.
