Description

463 small, black stone beads and one green stone bead are interspersed with 7 golden ellipsoid beads of rolled metal. One cylindrical bead with closed ends and an embossed figure on its golden surface is positioned centrally. The embossed figure is frontal with arms outspread. Details of a semi-lunar headdress, ear spools and decorated chin strap outline a face with generalized features. A lower tunic border or loincloth is shown. There are traces or red pigment on the bead. One rolled bead is lighter in colour and more tarnished than the other.

History Of Use

The embossed deity figure on the cylindrical bead is Chimu in style (north coast, 750-1476 C.E.). However, the other beads are not necessarily the same period as these beads. All have been recently restrung. The embossed bead may originally have been part of a necklace of similar beads, like extant examples.
