Description

A Black Ware ceramic bird head, round in shape and covered with heavy striations. The neck is broken all the way around and the head sits upright. The eyes are concentric with pupils bulging, a small down turned beak, and there are triangular markings under the eyes. Traces of red pigment remain in the heavy striations.

History Of Use

This may be an adornment or a knob from a large urn (p.c., Santiago Uceda).

Iconographic Meaning

The eye markings suggest this represents a hawk.
